Well the interesting thing I did today was I took some scrap jewelry and sold it. I was motivated by the fact that gold is 1,000 a ounce and the need to get rid of junk. It was things like empty ring settings and incredibly ugly jewelry that had been passed to us by elderly relatives as well as little bits and pieces that had been gathered up over the years. While I was there selling it a chick was standing next to me saying " It's so hard to get let go of these things...."
Now I'm not the most sentimental person in the world but honestly this stuff was not anything to cry over. It was worn and not classic by any means. Now my moms original wedding ring setting was in it. But she gave it to me cause she had the stones removed and reset many years ago. It was just a worn out old setting.
I tried to explain to the lady that this was just junk we where clearing out. Not important things.... But some people attach to anything.
Part of this was motivated by the fact that I realize that 20 years down the road I'm not going to suddenly like gold again. So I may as well sell the stuff and give some one else a chance to enjoy it. And maybe get something that is my style.
I did keep my 18 th birthday set. I explained to mom I realize that it's not really worth much ( parents didn't have a lot of money) and it's gold....but it is none the less a keep sake for me.
On the down side I discovered that the very popular jeweler in town that everyone went to cheated my mom several times down to stealing the diamonds from her ring when he reset it and replacing them...we are not sure they where even diamonds any more. I felt a true flash of anger at that, but he's dead now so that is that.
